Growing up as a Christian, I was taught that things like tarot, oracle decks, and psychic readings were evil—tools of the devil. Add to that the late-night commercials for Miss Cleo and the horror stories of astronomical phone bills, and you can see why I avoided anything remotely “occult” like the plague.
But over time, my perspective started to shift.
Today, I no longer see these tools as dark or demonic. Instead, I view them as tools for growth and alignment—right alongside my Bible (which I haven’t tossed aside, by the way). In this post, I want to walk you through that journey.
We’ll cover:
- What tarot and oracle decks are
- How I got introduced to them
- Whether I believe God can speak through these tools
- And how I actually use them to find alignment in my life
What Are Tarot & Oracle Decks?
Before diving into my story, let’s get on the same page about terminology.
What is Tarot?
Tarot is a 78-card deck that dates back to 15th-century Europe, originally created for playing a card game called tarocchi. It wasn’t until the 18th century that tarot became associated with mysticism and divination, thanks to French occultists who connected it (with little historical evidence) to ancient Egyptian wisdom, Kabbalah, and astrology.
Today, tarot is often used for spiritual insight or self-reflection. The deck is divided into:
- Major Arcana (22 cards) – archetypes and major life themes
- Minor Arcana (56 cards) – daily life elements, divided into four suits: Cups, Wands, Swords, and Pentacles
Interpretation happens through spreads, symbolism, and intuitive guidance—not rigid fortune-telling.

What are Oracle Decks?
Oracle decks are more freeform. Unlike tarot, there’s no set number of cards or required structure. They can be themed around angels, chakras, affirmations, animals—you name it. Because they’re less complex than tarot, many people find oracle decks easier to start with.
Most practitioners use both. Oracle cards provide intuitive guidance or inspiration, while tarot offers deeper reflection through a structured framework. Neither guarantees a glimpse into the future—they’re more like mirrors for the soul.

My Introduction to Tarot & Psychic Gifts
As someone who used to avoid even the section of the bookstore with tarot decks, I never imagined I’d one day own one myself. But a few key experiences began to shift my mindset.
Coaching Opened the Door
It started when I joined a 16-week business coaching program. While the strategy content wasn’t new to me, the mindset work was life-changing. That program led me into a mastermind, where I met psychics, Human Design readers, reiki practitioners, and spiritual coaches.
At first, I was cautious—watching from the edges. But I couldn’t ignore the deep transformation I witnessed in others. The results were real. That softening led me to be open to at least exploring.
A Free Tarot Reading Changed Everything
One day, my friend Danielle Hall—someone I met during that first coaching container—offered free readings on Facebook to the first seven people who commented.
I decided to take the plunge. Almost jokingly, I dropped a question:
“Why is my business struggling to gain traction?”
Later that day, Danielle sent me a voice note with my reading… and I was floored.
She spoke directly to internal struggles I hadn’t shared publicly. This wasn’t surface-level fluff—it was insight that pierced right to the heart. And it wasn’t a one-off. Soon I started getting weekly readings from her, and I still do to this day.
Her guidance has been so valuable that I even built her a website so others could access her work more easily:
The Synchronicities Were Too Strong to Ignore
Around the same time, I began working with another coach from the mastermind—Maisie Smith-Lovett, a trauma healer and intuitive guide.
We had bi-weekly calls where she’d use her psychic abilities and pull cards to guide the session. Every time, what came through was exactly what I needed to hear.
Here’s the wild part:
I always had those calls on Monday mornings—and Monday also happened to be the day I received Danielle’s readings. More times than I can count, Danielle would echo the exact same theme Maisie and I had just discussed, without knowing anything about the call.
That kind of synergy was too consistent to dismiss.
It felt like more than coincidence. It felt divine.
Getting My Own Deck
Even after all that, I still hesitated to bring a deck into my own home. Receiving readings felt like one thing… but using the cards myself? That felt like crossing a line.
But then two trusted friends—both devout Christians—told me they owned decks and used them as part of their spiritual practice. That gave me the permission I needed.
Given my love for Human Design, I chose the Quantum Human Design Activation Cards by Karen Curry Parker. Each card corresponds to one of the 64 gates in the Human Design system.
That was the beginning of my personal card practice.
Does God Speak Through Tarot?
This is probably the question I get asked most.
I get it—especially from Christians, it often comes from a place of curiosity or concern. Isn’t tarot about telling the future? Isn’t that forbidden?
Here’s how I see it.
I don’t use tarot to predict the future. I use it the same way I approach the Bible:
With an open heart, a listening posture, and a desire to hear from God.
Just like I might journal through a Scripture passage and walk away with clarity, I do the same with card pulls. It’s about intention. It’s about alignment. It’s about listening for that still, small voice.
Sometimes the messages do feel prophetic. But that’s biblical too. Prophets in Scripture heard messages others couldn’t. The test was never the method—it was always the message. Does it align with God’s character? Does it lead to truth and transformation?
Even Scripture contains examples of divinely sanctioned tools for guidance—like casting lots (Acts 1:26) or the Urim and Thummim (Exodus 28:30).
I’m not saying every tarot reader is channeling God. Just like not every preacher is speaking truth.
But I’ve learned to trust the fruit. And the fruit of this practice has been alignment, clarity, and peace.
How I Use My Oracle Deck for Alignment
Let me walk you through a recent example from my journal—June 28, 2025.
The Setting
It was a Saturday morning. My goal was to film a YouTube video and write the blog post to go with it. But I was dragging my feet. I felt stuck and frustrated.
So, I turned to journaling—and my deck—for help.
The Process
I started by writing my intention:
“Why am I procrastinating?”
Then I shuffled my deck, let a card fall out, and pulled:
Gate 58 – The Joy of Mastery
I read through the guidebook, taking in the themes: the challenge, the unbalanced expression, the keys for alignment. I reflected. I asked the questions provided. I let my mind wander.
Then I started freewriting.
No judgment. No editing. Just whatever came up.
What I Discovered
The card nailed it.
I realized that while I tend to pick things up quickly, I often quit when something gets hard. I rarely stick around long enough to master anything—which means I rob myself of the joy that mastery brings.
The video felt hard… so I avoided it.
That insight helped me reframe the task. Instead of dreading it, I leaned into the joy of improving, of growing, of staying the course.
Even though I still procrastinated a little (old habits die hard), I eventually got the video done—and had fun doing it.
That’s the power of a well-timed card pull.
It’s like God handpicked that message just for me. And honestly? I believe He did.
Final Thoughts
I’m not out here trying to tell the future or conjure spirits. I’m simply using the tools that help me align with truth, with growth, and with God.
My ears, eyes, and spirit are open—whether God speaks through Scripture, a dream, a card, or a conversation. And like Scripture encourages, I test every message to see if it aligns with what I know of God’s heart.
At the end of the day, I’m after one thing:
Truth that leads to transformation.
And if a tool helps me hear that truth more clearly, I’m open to it.
